Sisters lead dinner fete

{9/14/2009}

Dana Sue Walker, Tulsa World

We love this one. It's authentic Mexican cuisine, live mariachi music and lots of fun. It's the San Miguel School Sangria and Santos fundraising dinner set for 6 p.m. Nov. 5 on the St. Francis Xavier parish campus.

The event chairwomen are "the Boudreau sisters," the five daughters of the late Alfred and Katherine Boudreau.

The five — Mag Sullivan, Barbara Kehew, Margaret Ellison, Janet Pagano and Katie Boudreau — agreed that they accepted the request to be the chairwomen because "that's what our parents would have done." Their parents were active supporters of and advocates for Catholic education since the days when Oklahoma was a single diocese.

Alfred and Katherine Boudreau met at Holy Family High School, and the daughters grew up in the parish of St. Mary.

They have followed in their parents' footsteps. The Boudreau sisters have served the Tulsa community through Catholic endeavors for decades. Mag is a former director of Madonna House; Barbara is an active volunteer at her parish of St. Bernard and a former volunteer at Holy Family School and San Miguel; Margaret is a former director of development at San Miguel; Janet taught sacramental preparation at Monte Cassino school and once taught at St. Mary's School; and Katie, a former theology teacher at Bishop Kelley High School, is a spiritual director who helps facilitate the Ignatian Retreat in Daily Life. They may be "retired" from employment in the diocese, but they remain active in support of Catholic education, especially for those most in need.

"Our parents lived by the essence of the Scripture which says 'to whomever much is given, of him much will be expected'," Ellison says. "That's why we believe in what San Miguel is doing for the students and the community."

Said Joe O'Connor, San Miguel's president: "Our ultimate goal is to bring our students up to grade level and prepare them for success in high school, college and have a productive, fulfilling adulthood. Sangria and Santos is a fun way for anyone to help us achieve that goal.

"Sangria and Santos is an evening for enjoyment, for thanking our regular supporters, and for introducing new friends to the unique and challenging mission of our school."

Since 2004, San Miguel School has been educating children who are most at risk for dropping through the cracks of the educational, social and economic systems. The school is mission driven, not tuition driven, and is funded entirely by donations.

Charles Ely, an anchorman for KTUL, Channel 8, will be the master of ceremonies. The parents of San Miguel students will prepare the Mexican cuisine.

Sponsors include the George Kaiser Family Foundation, John Jarboe, On the Border 41st St., Jack Carlson, St. Francis Xavier Church, Catholic Charities, Mary Hoff, Mariachi "Santo Domingo", El Rancho Grande Restaurant, Families & Staff of San Miguel School, Debbie Crowley Designs and Crossroads Communications.
